SlimWonen
(A Design Pitch)
SlimWonen is a Dutch app that provides users with insights into their energy consumption, offering clear data on electricity and gas usage across various timeframes. It delivers personalized tips and challenges to promote energy savings, contributing to both financial savings and environmental sustainability.
UX Research & UI Design
I was tasked with designing a feature to encourage user retention for the app. After researching gamification's impact on user engagement through Google Scholar articles and competitive benchmarking, I concluded that incorporating gamification could effectively drive user return. I then moved on to the UI design, ensuring the feature was visually engaging while aligning with the app’s overall user experience. This process was grounded in both academic research and practical insights, aiming to boost long-term app usage and user satisfaction.

#01: How I did research with little to no resources.
I conducted a heuristic evaluation followed by the used of Google Scholar to gather academic insights on gamification’s impact on user engagement. Additionally, I conducted benchmarking by analyzing similar apps to identify successful gamification strategies, which helped inform the design choices for the new feature.
Some of the research done to identify pain points and ideation.
#02: My design process.
I mapped out the user flow to outline the key steps a user takes within the app, from entry to task completion. This helped ensure a smooth and intuitive experience. I also created a page flow to visualize how different screens connect and interact, allowing me to plan navigation and content hierarchy effectively. These flows served as the foundation for wireframes and helped align the structure with user needs and business goals.
Information Architecture of the Pages mapped out to include the NEW gamification features.
User flow on how the gamification process would work and other clickable features.
I chose to sketch on paper to freely explore ideas without constraints. The tactile process helped me quickly visualize layouts, test concepts, and iterate on designs before committing to digital wireframes. It encouraged creativity and clearer thinking in the early design phase.
#03: Sketching the ideas out.

#04: The High-Fidelity Prototype and Pitch Deck
I created a prototype to bring the app experience to life and demonstrate key user flows. Alongside this, I built a pitch deck to showcase my end-to-end design process—from user research to wireframes, visual design, and final screens. The deck highlighted the problem, design rationale, and how each solution addressed user needs.
This presentation format helped clearly communicate the project’s value and usability to stakeholders, making the concept easy to understand and visually engaging.
The homepage (as you scroll). It features an overview of your energy usage as well as daily missions (gamification features), a leader board and extra things to discover like articles.
The gamification page showing your daily streak, missions, badges and leaderboard.
Striking and engaging notification pages for when you’ve achieved and unlocked something.
